What to know.
Intense pulsed light, or IPL, delivers a broad range of light wavelengths. Depending on the device and settings, it may be considered for selected pigmentation, redness or hair concerns.
A plan built around you.
Before treatment
IPL is not identical to laser. We identify the target and check your skin type, tanning history, medications and any suspicious or changing lesions before considering treatment.
What to expect
Protective eyewear is used, and the treated area may feel warm. Short-term redness or darkening of pigment can occur before it settles. A series of sessions may be suggested.
Target the concern, then choose the light.
IPL uses broad-spectrum pulses of light rather than a single laser wavelength. It may be considered for selected superficial pigment, redness or hair concerns, depending on the equipment and skin type. The first step is identifying the target correctly, especially where a new or changing mark is involved.
Before your visit
Tell us about tanning, sun exposure, photosensitising medicines and previous pigment reactions. A patch test may be appropriate. We will explain preparation for the specific area and device.
Aftercare and review
The skin can be red or warm; treated pigmentation may temporarily look darker. Do not pick at the area, and follow sun-protection and product advice while it recovers.
Suitability and aftercare matter.
Not every skin tone or concern is suitable for IPL. Incorrect selection can lead to burns or pigment change, so assessment and sun precautions matter.
Before you decide.
We can discuss your own history and goals in more detail at consultation.
Is IPL the same as a laser?
No. IPL uses a broader light spectrum; suitability depends on the concern and device.
Can IPL treat a changing mole?
A changing or suspicious lesion needs medical assessment rather than cosmetic light treatment.
Is IPL the same as laser?
No. IPL uses a range of wavelengths, while laser uses a more specific beam. The suitable method depends on the target, skin and available device.
Can IPL be used for every dark spot?
No. Pigmented lesions need assessment, and suspicious or changing marks should be reviewed medically instead of treated cosmetically.
